A general basis set algorithm for galactic haloes and discs

چکیده

We present a unified approach to (bi-)orthogonal basis sets for gravitating systems. Central our discussion is the notion of mutual gravitational energy, which gives rise ‘self-energy inner product’ on mass densities. consider first-order differential operator that self-adjoint with respect this product, and prove general theorem conditions under set arises by repeated application operator. then show these are fulfilled all families analytical infinite extent have been discovered date. The new theoretical framework turns out be closely connected Fourier-Mellin transforms, it powerful tool constructing sets. demonstrate deriving isochrone model demonstrating its numerical reliability reproducing known result concerning unstable radial modes.

Virial shocks in galactic haloes?

We investigate the conditions for the existence of an expanding virial shock in the gas falling within a spherical dark-matter halo. The shock relies on pressure support by the shock-heated gas behind it. When the radiative cooling is efficient compared to the infall rate the post-shock gas becomes unstable; it collapses inwards and cannot support the shock. We find for a monoatomic gas that th...

Magnetic fields in galactic haloes

Magnetic fields on a range of scales play a large role in the ecosystems of galaxies, both in the galactic disk and in the extended layers of gas away from the plane. Observing magnetic field strength, structure and orientation is complex, and necessarily indirect. Observational data of magnetic fields in the halo of the Milky Way are scarce, and non-conclusive about the large-scale structure o...

Galactic stellar haloes in the CDM model

We present six simulations of galactic stellar haloes formed by the tidal disruption of accreted dwarf galaxies in a fully cosmological setting. Our model is based on the Aquarius project, a suite of high-resolution N-body simulations of individual dark matter haloes. We tag subsets of particles in these simulations with stellar populations predicted by the GALFORM semianalytic model. Our metho...

Radial mixing in galactic discs

We show that spiral waves in galaxy discs churn the stars and gas in a manner that largely preserves the overall angular momentum distribution and leads to little increase in random motion. Changes in the angular momenta of individual stars are typically as large as ∼ 50% over the lifetime of the disc. The changes are concentrated around the corotation radius for an individual spiral wave, but ...

Stability and Evolution of Galactic Discs

In this review, I discuss just three aspects of the stability and evolution of galactic discs. (1) I first review our understanding of the bar instability and how it can be controlled. Disc galaxies in which the orbital speed does not decrease much towards the centre have no difficulty avoiding bars, even when dark matter makes an insignificant contribution to the inner part of the rotation cur...
